Blog Days 27 - 32

Again, it's been crazy busy! Here's a bit of a re-cap minus photos.

Day 27
We decided to make the trip out to Williamsburg in Brooklyn because we had heard it had awesome coffee and good boutique stores. We were not disappointed! The first stop for us was a cute little cafe called Vittoria where we actually had proper coffee (much to Sohan's excitement)!! A successful morning of shopping was had with Rachel and Sohan picking up some nice items both for themselves and gifts.

When it got time for lunch we decided we would do the touristy thing and head to Grimaldi's but looking at the map it was a fair way away and with no taxis in sight we decided to head to the East Village to go to another place we had been told about called Lil Frankie's. Once we finally found it, we saw it was closed on weekdays for lunch! We ended up going to Katz's Deli, the one from When Harry Met Sally, which was just around the co0rner. It was very overwhelming with lots of customers, probably a couple of hundred pictures of the owners and famous people lining the walls, but what was more overwhelming was the amount of meat in our sandwiches!

After four weeks of walking non-stop it was truly getting to Marni and Sohan, so we stopped by the Strand Bookshop but then these two headed to get a pedicure (we opted for the spa package) and chilled out for half an hour, while Rachel got lost in the 18 miles of books at the Strand.

On our way back to our apartment we stopped into Max Brenner for some hot chocolate (which they apparently do have in New York!), but also received a message from our friend Sean saying he was in the area so we headed back near our apartment to meet up with him and catch up which was nice! We then headed home to our pasta leftovers and headed into Times Square to get our Hershey's fix and buy s'more (graham cracker + melted choc + marshmallow) supplies - which were amazeballs by the way!

Day 28
We did another spot of shopping at Urban Outfitters and Bloomingdales and then headed to Chelsea to see the High Line Park and got sandwiches from the Chelsea Markets. After our lunch in the park we headed back home and got ready for BROADWAY!!! We met up with Sean at B and H Photos and then headed to his friends' rented apartment where we hung out with Tim, Paul, Matt and Noel.

We headed to the Minskoff Theatre for THE LION KING! Which was amazing for lack of a better word...we hung out with the boys for a bit longer and then said goodbye to Sean who heads off to London today!

Day 29
Today we actually slept in!! We had a chilled out morning and headed to Soho House in the Meat Packing district to meet Priya. Soho House is a members only club kind of thing which has a rooftop pool (we did not use), we ate amazing salads and headed out for a look around the shops. We found some awesome things that were slightly out of our price range but Marni managed to snag a jumper for $40!

We then headed out to Buttercup Bakery (we are basically doing a cupcake tour of NYC), Marni tried the banana pudding (amazeballs) and Rachel and Sohan got cupcakes and a brownie. After this sugar fix we got ready for dinner with Priya, we headed to her apartment and had a late dinner around 9:30, at an awesome restaurant called Ilili.

Day 30
We made the trek out to Coney Island, which is a long way from Manhattan! We walked around, had a hot dog, then decided we'd pretty much done Coney Island, so we headed back to the city for Fifth Avenue. We visited Saks Fifth Avenue (where Marni and Rachel actually bought something!), then visited Tiffany's & Co (where we all realised we could afford nothing), made a quick stop at Nike and Victoria's Secret, before dumping our stuff at the apartment, and going to a movie at a small cinema nearby. We'd decided on the new Woody Allen movie 'To Rome With Love', which was quite weird, and didn't entirely make sense, but was enjoyable all the same.

For dinner we tried to go to a Mexican place in the East Village recommended by Keith, but we couldn’t find it! So we settled on a cute pizzeria/bar.

Day 31
We had a chillaxed morning again, then made our way to the Little Owl for brunch, which happens to be at the bottom of the building that was used as the exterior for Friends! So we kinda went to the real life Central Perk!

We met Keith and Catherine at the City Hall Park, right near the Manhattan side of Brooklyn Bridge, then we walked across it in the disgusting heat and humidity that we had! We walked past Grimaldi's and saw the long line out the door and were glad we weren't waiting in that. We wandered around for a bit to find something for lunch, and finally stopped at a place where we had a view of both Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and the East River. Once we were cool once again, we ran to the subway, trying not to get wet from the huge drops of rain that were falling from the sky.

Once back in Manhattan we were feeling pretty drained, so we just went back to the apartment, got clean and chilled by watching the stupid movies on our only good TV channel, which included a clean version of The Hangover (which was a very strange experience...) We also got pizza from nearby and ate on the couch which was fun!

Day 32
The day started off with a trip to Amy's Bread in Hell's Kitchen which had been reccommended to us. We made the mistake of getting drinks instead of the awesome looking pastries and bread on display, none of us were too impressed with our beverages. We then got a taxi to Riverside Park where we chilled for a while, played on the swings and seesaws, and then walked over to Zabar's Delicatessan where we had sandwiches. A trip to Ben&Jerry's was also in order since we were yet to visit there, so we got on the subway to one uptown, which was so good! We went back to Bloomingdales for Sohan and Marni to do some last minute gift shopping, then we got ready for the evening. We met Rachel's friend Sofie in Central Park, and we had another little picnic while listening to the New York Philharmonic. So many people turned up, the lawn was packed!! We left early, as the dark, the bugs and our tiredness were getting to us.

Days 24 - 26: Lots of food and exploration

This place just has so much to do!!! Hence our lack of updates. Here's some dot points of the past three days

Day 24
  • Went to Soho - Marni got awesome glasses from Warby Parker, Sohan got some awesome sunglasses. Went to Lombardi's Pizza for lunch, stopping at cute boutiques along the way, then a quick stop at Supreme.
  • Did a cruise on the water, got to see the Statue of Liberty, the islands around Manhattan that make up the rest of the city and the skyline of New York.
  • Chilled at the apartment, then dinner with Rachel's boyfriend's cousin, fiancee, and other cousin's boyfriend (complex connection, a little), Keith, Catherine and Paul. We had Malaysian and sangria, and lots of fun!
Day 25
  • We went to the Museum of Modern Art, which was cool and weird at the same time.
  • Then we met up with Sohan's friend Julia from school, had Five Guys burgers for lunch, then went to FAO Schwartz to see some toys (we all went back to when we were 8!), stepped into Henry Bendell for a bit, then did a bit of grocery shopping.
  • In the evening we had the cutest little picnic at Bryant Park, including Magnolia cupcakes, and watched a free open air movie in the park while eating, On the Waterfront.
Day 26
  • This morning we went to the Museum of Natural History with a lovely walk through Central Park.
  • Gray's Papaya was for lunch, hot dogs and juice.
  • We went through  Central Park again to Bethesda Fountain, enjoyed an ice-cream, then considered going to Central Park Zoo, but decided against it, since it didn't have the animals from Madagascar.
  • Made a pit stop at Bloomingdale's along the way where Sohan and Rachel got some awesome bargains.
  • Then home for dinner, and made our way to meet Keith and Catherine for the 'Dirty Projectors' concert we bought tickets to, which was lots of fun and we heard some great music!
All in all very busy, will try to blog soon with photos!

Day 23: More sightseeing in New York

Today we went to Brooklyn (we go hard!), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Magnolia's Bakery for yummy cupcakes, and Macy's!

Another day...another tour bus!

The Flatiron Building!

The NYC skyline from Brooklyn

It was a bloody hot day...Marni just couldn't take it...

Here are Marni and Sohan at the Met or should we say (for Sohan) the Gossip Girl stairs? (outside the Met)

There is an actual deer under all of...this.

Some fun trumpets!

The Egyptian exhibit

A creepy/mirror/art piece, how may eyes and mouths do you spot?!

Vincent Van Gough

We also ate way too much sugar at Magnolia's Bakery, and did a bit of shopping at Macy's!

Tomorrow, Marni gets new glasses woo!

Days 20 - 22: New York New York :D

Picture blog today cause we're just too busy and tired to write anything too detailed. We're in NYC and it's amazing, 'nuff said.

We left Washington via train in the morning, then got to New York around 1pm. We finally got to our apartment after quite a while of travel, which is nice, but small! After we got settled we went for a little explore, and found this burger place call 'brgr', which was both entertaining to pronounce, and yum to eat!

We made our way down to Central Park after food...

...and started remembering many a movie set here in New York!

We then freshened up, and went to Marni's cousin's place for 4th July drinks. We continued on to the West side after this, as apparently this is a good place to see the fireworks, which we did! We also made some friends during the firework wait.

Our next day in New York had a late start, we did some grocery shopping, then Sohan and Rachel went to get their nails done, Marni was having lunch with her cousin, which some added (yet unmentionable) excitement for her!

We all met up again at Times Square, which is just weird. IT NEVER STOPS MOVING. It's also near all the Broadway theatres which was cool to see, and we also saw the theatre where we will be seeing the Lion King!

Next stop: Top of the Rock. This out the front of the building.

67 floors up!

We caught the last bit of sunlight in front of the Empire State.

Then got to see the city by night too! Perfect timing for a beautiful sunset.

Our third day in New York (today) brought out the tourist in us again, once again boarding a sightseeing tour bus.

At our first stop, Starbucks was required, and according to the employees there, we are Rachel, Stephan and Marly...

Washington Square Park, near Soho, NYU and Greenwich Village

The site of the WTC. New building going up, set to be the tallest in NYC!

The 9/11 memorial

Dinner! The waiter thought we couldn't eat 2 of these, BUT WE DID!

Hopefully we can update you again soon, but this is the city that never sleeps!

Day 18 & Day 19: Washington!

Day 18 was the ultimate tourist for us - we hopped on a city sightseeing bus around the city of Washington. We didn't really have any idea about where to start in terms of what to see here, so it seemed like the best option for us. After a grocery shop in the morning (we're being cute here and eating all our meals in our lil apartment), we headed to Union Station to get on at the first sightseeing bus, which took us past the Washington Monument and a lot of the Smithsonian museums.

Us on the sight seeing tour bus being epic tourists!

Our first stop was the at all the president's memorials, including the Thomas Jefferson, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Martin Luther King, the Korean War Veteran and the Abraham Lincoln Memorials.

Thomas Jefferson memorial

We hopped back on the bus until The White House, got a quick pic, then headed to a cafe to pause in air conditioning for a sec, cause the heat was really getting to us!

The White House!

Next stop was at the National Archives, where the originals of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights are stored. We felt like this was something we just had to see while we were here. We also checked out some of the public archives which was interesting. The writing was so faded  and we could barely make out what it said - just little bits of "United States of America" and "freedom" here and there...

We then tried to stop off at the Smithsonian Castle, but it was closed by the time we got there, so we just headed home for dinner and a chillax out of the heat!

Day 19 was our designated museum and cupcake day! We started the day off with the Spy Museum! We each got our covers and we began the self guided tour.  It was lots of fun, but at times a little expensive and perhaps not quite worth the $20 we had to pay to get in...After that we headed to the Newseum which was kind of amazing!

There were so many cool Pulitzer prize winning photos and things from 9/11 and a lot of other really interesting things.

Being contemplative looking at award winning photo journalism

ON AIR!

Dedication to the Australian journalists who have left us

This lady was super cool, she sang us a "museum song" and also sang us 'RAPPS' - R for Religion, A for Assembly, P for Petition, P for Press, and S for Speecheh!

Today's headlines all over the USA

They also had an interactive newsroom at the Newseum, where we could pick a location and be reporters. Lets just say it was hilarious. Because there was 3 of us, we had to introduce ourselves before reading from the prompt screen, so we had to wait for it to scroll down before we could start talking and then it didn't make sense because we missed a paragraph and.... yeah. See the video below.

After we left the Newseum we headed to Georgetown, where we were told there was an amazing cupcake place, Georgetown Cupcakes.  We knew they'd be good, but when we arrived and saw a line out the door we were still surprised, and we were not disappointed! We may have even bought two for our dessert after dinner tonight...

We've just finished watching The Beaver (strange movie...) and are now started on Something Borrowed to get us pumped for NEW YORK TOMORROW!

Don't be surprised if there's no blog post tomorrow...it's the 4th of July which means we will hopefully be out having an amazing time in Central Park or whatever!

Day 17: Travel Again

Hello everybody!

Not much to report today, we were chilling and travelling basically.

Got up, had a buffet breakfast at a different hotel to our one (since it was half the price), then checked out of our hotel.

We headed to Downtown Disney to catch a movie, struggling through the stifling humidity of Orlando. We decided to see 'Magic Mike' (which we almost didn't get into because of Rachel's lack of ID), which was good, especially with servers to bring food to us, and it was only $12 for the ticket! However, NOT A MOVIE FOR THE UNDERAGED!

We picked up our bags from the hotel, made our way to the airport, and had an awesome, cheap, yummy dinner there.

Once again we were not impressed by United Airlines and their rude air hostesses!

Finally made it to our accommodation in Washington, which is awesome!! We'll post a piccie tomorrow, hopefully with some more interesting news :)
